Farewell Functions in JNV, Karimnagar

Today the Vidyalaya arranged a farewell to Smt. Vandana Pawar, music teacher. She worked for nearly 23 years here and has now been transferred to JNV, Kagaj Nagar.

In the absence of the Principal, the vice-principal presided over the function. Shri Vittal Rao, PGT Biology & Sr. Teacher also shared the dais.

Of late farewell programmes have lost their sheen in the Vidyalaya. The situation is unlikely to improve in the months to come. On one  or two or occasions, there were doubts about organising a farewell programme. One of the teachers said no to to arranging a farewell for him.. For all others, despite the lingering doubts, the farewell functions were arranged somehow. I have observed changes even in the way the circulars are written to communicate the organisation of the farewell programme. The matter of fact tone is clearly visible.

Doesn't a teacher deserve a decent farewell? A teacher working with children fills a few pages in their book of life. They influence children for good or bad. But children quite easily forget the bitter memories caused by some teachers. They easily forget and forgive. I have seen children praying for the transfer a few teachers but they gave them a nice farewell despite the past animosities. This bond between children and teachers is very unique. A teacher always shares his ideas with children, and develops rapport with them which builds an emotional bond between them. So a teacher should be provided with a formal opportunity to share his memories and offer thanks to all before leaving the  Vidyalaya.

The way a farewell programme is organised reflects the culture of the school. The occasion should be used as an opportunity to build good relations among staff and children. The nurturing of these cordial relations is a great a great stimulus to learning. Where the relationships do not reflect trust, the school fails to train thoughtful children. Schools should not be replicas our society's shortcomings. In stead they  should offer an alternative culture which helps children develop healthy attitudes. The time the students gather for a celebration should be used as opportunity to foster healthy attitudes and values among them. Gratitude, warmth, affection, sacrifice, thoughtfulness, selflessness, etc. are some of the values that children imbibe as they work closely with one another - fellow students as well as teachers. All activities of the school  are opportunities for children to acquire many positive qualities unknowingly.

Children should be given an opportunity to prepare a programme when a farewell programme is planned. They should not be passive spectators. They may talk to the outgoing teacher before finalising the programme. Involving alumni is good. The school should have a continuous rapport with the alumni. There is always a lot to share between the school and the alumni. I pity the schools  that fail to set up continuous communication channels with its alumni.

Smt. Vandana Pawar has a beautiful voice. She enjoys singing. She craves for appreciation and, as many speakers have said, her happiest day one when students sing the songs in the morning assembly beautifully in unison.  Like many creative teachers, she is willing to give students more than what the administration expects them. She has always played an admirable role in the cultural programmes. She is not the one who shies from work. I was fortunate to  accompany her team which participated in Regional Level National Integration in Hyderabad. The girl participants had a great time dancing to an Annamacharya Keerthana. They looked so adorable in their make-up and Kuchipudi costumes.
Another memorable occasion was the performance of a drama depicting an episode from the Ramayana. But it was all in Hindi. M. Divya, class XII, lent her voice to Sita and her modulations were simply wonderful. Smt. Vandana brought the best out of the students.

Wish Vandanaji all the best!
